Special feature : New wave of Information Retrieval. Historical development and new trend of information retrieval, |
Kazuaki KISHIDA (Faculty of Cultural Information Resources, Surugadai Univ.) |
Abstract : Research and development in the filed of information retrieval (IR) are reviewed. We discuss some topics on the development : (1)historical background of traditional IR techniques including post-coordinate indexing, Boolean search, thesaurus, free-term searching and so on, (2)history of databases provided by commercial services, and (3) qualitative change of IR after the advent of the Internet. Also, the paper reviews some important topics in IR studies such as statistical and probabilistic methods, application of natural language processing, retrieval experiment projects and user-oriented approach. Finally, a recent trend of IR study is discussed. |

Abstract : Fulltext search method is rather low cost and can improve recall ratio if compared with traditional keyword with the thesaurus. The main stream of fulltext search algorithms are string search, signature file, and inverted file. In the case of Japanese, there are two methods to get indexing atoms ; one is by word (morphological analysis), and the other is by character (character N-gram). The ranking search is used in fulltext search system. The similarity between query and document is calculated by tf* idf which uses term frequency in document(tf), and document frequency of term. (df). |

Abstract : This paper is a survey of multimedia information retrieval. Multimedia information includes images, music, spoken documents and videos. Content retrieval and retrieval by Kansei are also described. Future issues, such as combining information retrieval by index terms and content retrieval, and copyright protection system are also discussed. |

Noriko KANDO (Research and Development Department, National Center for Science Information Systems (NACSIS)) |
Abstract : This paper introduces the outline of the NTCIR and IREX Workshops, the first evaluation workshops of Japanese information retrieval and related areas, which were held on August 30-September 3, 1999. The paper also discusses the brief history of laboratory-typed IR system testing, and implications of the test collections and evaluation workshops like TREC, IREX, NTCIR and so on. Finally some thoughts on future will be mentioned. |

Abstract : This paper describes the transformation of NACSIS information retrieval service (NACSIS-IR). NACSIS has provided database search service called NACSIS-IR since 1987. NACSIS-IR plans to start new information retrieval service based on fulltext search engine in January 2000. The authors introduce structure of databases, search functions, WWW-based user interfaces, and other features of new NACSIS-IR. |

Abstract : Describes financial market and government's financial policy and their connection with statistics. Introduces “Financial and Economic Statistics Monthly" compiled by the Japan Bank, as a representative financial statistics. Gives explanation on ‘money stock' and ‘flow of funds account'. ‘Money stock' is used as an indicator for grasping the movement of financial market and financial policy. ‘Flow of funds account' gives a general view of the currency and credit flow in the national economy. |
