Abstract : Now the fulltext of patents of numerous countries is
available on the Internet. However, availability of fulltext does not guarantee
searcher satisfaction. This article describes how Derwent Information produces
purpose written abstract for searchers, designed to give high recall and

Abstract : Background : Emergence of the Internet brings a more important role for author abstract. However, Japanese author abstracts seem to be regarded as simply a summary of the article. They should be more convincing. Aim/Method : To find what is the most effective author abstract, by comparing the instructions to authors of Japanese journals and finding what a new trend of structured abstract is. Results: The concept of the author abstract is varied, and nine different terms are found among journals' instructions to authors. Few journals define details about author abstracts, and 79% of them describe only the limit of length for the author abstract. Informative instructions about abstracts from eight journals are listed. Structured abstracts are found in more than one third of journals in Clinical Medicine. |

Abstract :An abstract is a brief, comprehensive, summary of the
contents of the article. It allows readers to survey the contents of an
article quickly. It is used by abstracting and information services to index
and retrieve articles. English paragraph constitutes a separate unit of
thought. This fact is most important quality. This characteristic is known
as unity. Another characteristic is coherence. Coherence is the typically
straight line of development of an English paragraph. |
