Abstract : Reference activity in a special library aims to support thebusiness of the institution it belongs to. As users are specialized on a filed, the services are also expected to be professional to meet their demands. Librarians with a wide range of high skills are necessity to deliver prominent reference service. With it variousity and uncertainty, it is not easy to standarize the manual. But at the same time, the reference service is the hub of special library's activities and it provides eternal challenge and joy for librarians. |

Abstract : When there is a question from the user, it is the reference interview what is done in order to know the user with an information demand. In wide sense, the technology of the reference interview is the ability of finding out the materials. “Experience" occupies large specific gravity on this part. On the other hand, the part of actually “method of the interview" is easy to be made into the manual. This is “technology" of the reference interview in the strict meaning. In this paper, whether how far is “technology", and whether how far is “experience" was examined referring to various cases. |

Abstract : This article demonstrates significance and a method
of practical training for reference services, referring to activities
of San-Tama Reference Tankentai, a case study group of public librarians. Secondly, the article shows that group case study, that is, comparing search processes, is an effective method for developing reference skills. I also refer to the following basic techniques for the method : 1. How to record reference processes. 2. How to use reference tools made from accumulated and shared records. 3. Usefulness of compilations of case studies. |

Abstract : The mailing list is the mechanism to deliver
one posted E-mail to all the members registered beforehand. The number
of open mailing lists in the country reaches thousands, and the number
is more than tens of thousands if the closed ones are included. It
is possible to say that the utility value of the mailing list is high
in this situation. In this paper, first we give an outline of the mailing list and introduce “Reference Mailing List (Reference-ML)" which has been set up on the subject of reference. Then, we consider how the reference service support by the new human network is carried out and what influence it has on reference librarians. |

This paper describes the contents of IDE's Home Page and reviews four examples of the references by using the Internet. Then provides several sources for locating and keeping current with valuable Internet sites as reference tools. This also covers the impact of the Internet on reference services at the IDE Library. |

Abstract :Although it seems that the reference fixes
in Japan, they are actual circumstances in which the distance does
not reach actually, as the Itsuo Miura has indicated it. Ohgushi has
also indicated that the service of the level of what is called research
consultant is important. Though the view got from the precedence research is not only on the at all negative thing, there are small storage, and the criterion for evaluation has not been established. Since it becomes an opportunity when that construction and storage of the criterion for evaluation are useful for the improvement in the reference service is widely recognized, the introduction of the reference assessment manual was tried, while it referred to the storage in U.S.A.. |

Abstract :Scholarly publishing is dominated by a few, large publishers, which has caused the rapid increase of subscription prices, and threat to the fair use at libraries and education. To counteract these trends, ARL started the SPARC project where it will cooperate with academic societies or publishers to pursue new publishing venture as an alternative model to the existing highly-priced journals. |
