Abstract: Information technologies greatly increase the opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in the society, including education and employment. Their information environments have drastically improved through products and services such as personal computers, the Internet, and social networking based on interface technologies such as character recognition and speech syntheses. This article reviews how those technologies have affected the information environments, focusing on the situations of people with print-related disabilities. It also introduces a vision for future research into accessibility for the elderly and for people with limited literacy.

Abstract: This paper introduces the activities of non-profit organization (NPO) gharmony¥i,h which works aiming at the realization of information society in which everyone can participate, and clarifies various challenges at present related to the universal design of information environment that have been revealed through these activities. It also delivers expectation for people in various positions such as persons who transmit and operate information by utilizing IT, producers and developers of IT, and persons who assist citizens with informational handicap, in order to convey what would be necessary in the future for the realization of social participation, through the benefit of information society, of everyone as many as possible including persons with informational handicap.

Abstract: DAISYiDigital Accessible Information Systemjis an international standard of digital talking books to ensure access to information for persons with print disabilities. This paper focuses on accessible digital textbooks in DAISY multimedia format which are considered as effective for pupils with reading disabilities. It also focuses on the current situation, outcome and challenges of the provision of such textbooks by volunteers. In order to ensure opportunities for everyone the expectation about accessible digital textbooks based on the convergence of EPUB and DAISY is described from the perspective of universal design.

Abstract: Information environment that provides equitable information access and communication activities is realized by information and communication technology together with everyonefs daily activities. We introduce the concept of message that consists of physical media and patterns, or data, described by the media. With the use of the message that carries information, we describe a model for information environment including information access and communication. A media conversion technique is described that uses text-to-speech technology and text-coding method as an example of information service for visually impaired and blind people. We show that technological and user factors are important in designing equitable information services.

Abstract: In 2012, National Diet Library launched new Kidsf OPAC called gInternational Library of Childrenfs Literature Online Public Access Catalog for Kidsh. The OPAC is for elementary school children, which literacy skill and knowledge acquisition are still developing. In this article, developing the concept of the OPAC and several functions for children are discussed.
