Status and issues of machine translation

Abstract : Along with the rapid advancement of computers and computer networks, large volume of online texts, including bilingual texts becomes available these days. Such a situation enables the machine translation development and research based on bilingual texts, such as statistical MT and example-based MT, rather than rule-based approach. This paper gives an overview of status and issues of data-driven machine translation, and further discusses the automatic evaluation metrics for MT and evaluation workshops.

Machine translation tools for daily tasks

Abstract : It has been more than 15 years since Japan's first commercial machine translation system was introduced. Today, various forms of machine translation systems and tools for translation are available. Some people still have a negative view of translation using machine translation systems; however, they are highly beneficial if used with a full understanding of their ability.
This paper proposes effective ways to use machine translation systems, aiming at business users. In business translation, translators have various skill levels, objectives are varied, and requirements, including speed, costs and quality, are diverse. In response to each situation, which system is the most appropriate as well as which way to use is the most beneficial are considered. In addition, the present status of machine translation in different languages from English, which is rapidly growing in demand, is also mentioned.

Abstract : With this article, CK-PRIME (Chinese and Korean Patent Retrieval in Multi-limgual Environment) is introduced. Using the Cross Lingual System features of the system, Japanese users can search Chinese or Korean patents using Japanese language and those patents can be displayed in Japanese language as well. We stored 1.6 million Korean patents & utility models and 2.45 million Chinese patents, utility models and designs.

Evaluation and comparison for machine translation

Abstract :Evaluation of machine translation is important for its development and users. Types of evaluation include translation quality evaluation, functionality evaluation, reproductivity evaluation, and other kinds of evaluations (such as processing speed and portability). Studies on translation quality evaluation have frequently been made in the past. Here, we will describe manpower evaluation on translation quality, as well as automatic evaluation that has been attracting attention lately. In regards to functionality evaluation and reproductivity evaluation, we will overview evaluations and studies made by authors. In functionality evaluation, functions in each machine translation software are compared and evaluated. In reproductivity evaluation of machine translation, reproductivity of proper web screen composition is evaluated. As a result, it was found that both functionality and reproductivity vary considerably depending on each product.

A review of speech-to-speech translation research

Abstract : The goal of research on Speech-to-Speech Translation is to create a system that translates spoken utterances in a source language to those in a different target language. To achieve this goal, it is essential to build robust and accurate speech recognition, machine translation, and speech synthesis engines for the spoken language, and integrate the engines effectively. This paper introduces recent trends of this technology on the basis of ATR's Speech-to-Speech Translation System which is designed for a travel conversation domain.

Extension system of patent duration period of medicine and how to search the extension information (in Japan)

Abstract : Extension of patent duration-period is accepted about human medicine, animal medicine and agricultural chemical etc. In this time, the extension systems of patent duration period in Japan, the United States and Europe are described and how to search extension information such as expiry date of human medicine are investigated. In three-time series, we report the system and how to search. In the first manuscript, the domestic system and the search using several databases are introduced.
