Kiyoshi IKEDA (Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute Library, (2-4, Shirakata Shirane, Tokai-mura, Naka-gun, Ibaraki, 319-1195 JAPAN))

Abstract : Conference proceedings are information resources used for researchers to access latest research trends. Although they are important materials that should be collected by the library, it is generally very difficult to acquire them because they are not commercially available. JAERI (Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute) Library collects about 19,000 proceedings and makes them available for the researchers. This paper introduces JAERI Library's experience in acquiring conference proceedings in a variety of ways including collecting conference information from academic societies or researchers, utilizing INIS (International Nuclear Information System) database as well as provision of conference proceedings. JAERI-Conf series, which are the proceedings of conferences hosted by JAERI and published as JAERI's research reports, are also introduced.

Continual information dissemination by academic societies.
―Changes brought by the internet and digital opportunities.

Yuko NAGAI (The Zoological Society of Japan (Toshin Building, 2-27-2 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-0033, JAPAN))

Abstract : Academic societies in Japan possess a wide range of information that includes budget documents, election outcomes, conference minutes, document abstracts, and other important items. Traditionally, these societies disseminate their information to the public through their journals. However, given the recent maturation of the Internet, information possessed by academic societies can be made accessible to anyone online. Thus, academic societies in Japan should take it upon themselves to use this technology in order to contribute substantially to worldwide scholarly communication.
