Mitsuhiro TAKEMURA

Abstract : "Memory" is recorded in the digital environment and the opportunities of the future involve digital archives. Digital archives unify the polar opposites of institutional accumulation and stability with individual discreteness and creativity, joining strength with strength. Both "heaviness" and "lightness" are joined leading to greater fluidity and creativity. In the universal storage & exchange of digital information wealth, a new commons emerges in connection with next-generation knowledge-creation from the viewpoint of individual archive environments.

Abstract : The national effort to achieve long-term digital preservation is led by the national library in Europe, America and Australia. National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) is a nationwide, big-budget (about 1 billion dollars), comprehensive and strategic initiative being led by the Library of Congress. In order to ensure long-term digital preservation and access, NDIIPP will develop a network of collaborative partners of stakeholders and a technical infrastructure that will enable. collaboration among partners. In Japan, although the national Diet Library strted the investigation and research project from FY2002, other remarkable projects currently undertaken by other institutions are not found.

Masamitsu KURIYAMA
(Tokiwa University. College of Human Science (1-430-1 Miwa, Mito, Ibaraki 310-8585))
Abstract : The Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS) is an important guide to constructing a system to preserve digital information over the long term. It is also an ISO standard. This paper discusses concepts concerning the Information Package in the OAIS model and actual activities to create preservation metadata frameworks based on it. The OAIS reference model is widely recognized among organizations which are active or interested in digital preservation, but actual metadata schemas or frameworks they are developing often have a different structure from the Information Package in the OAIS model. To balance needs of each organization and interoperability/reusability is an emerging challenge.
