Role of Review Journal in the Journal Communities

@Abstract : To consider the meaning of gReview Journal", the present paper examines the following two questions ; 1) What is the greviewed, original products"? ; 2) What does it mean gto be reviewed"? For the first question, the concept of Journal Community makes it understandable to think about greviewed, original products". Moreover, consideration on the citation system makes it possible to analyze the meaning of gto be reviewed". By reviewing (citation), the target paper change the meaning in the system of original papers and the review paper play a role as a gcompass" for the following papers.

Performance analyses of review journals and review articles emerging from citation trends

@Abstract : In order to determine features of review articles and review journals, the article verifies performance indicators with bibliographic and citation statistics in Journal Citation ReportsR. Within specific categories in JCR, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology & Pharmacy publish many review journals and increased number of review articles over the last decade. The disciplines in which a review article has around one hundred cited references are identified. Review journals have relatively high Impact Factors and Immediacy Index compared to non-review journals, which demonstrates notable contributions and values of review journals in the ongoing, advanced scientific research. The number of review articles originated from Japan tripled in the past decade, while US and UK constitute the majority of review publishing.

@Abstract : The purpose of this paper is to examine the significance and the function of the review as scholarly communication media. The author clarified the present situation of review journals on library and information science, pedagogy in Japan compared with those in England and the United States. In Japan, there are few reviews and review journals, because the academic societies are small compared with those in the United States and also the reviews are given low value as research publications and researchers tend to interpret the function and the concept of the review narrowly.

An Information Bulletin gCurrent Awareness" : the Role and New Directions

@Abstract : Current Awareness is a bulletin on library and information science edited by the National Diet Library (NDL). Since the first number in 1979, the bulletin has provided useful information to let Japanese librarians keep current on their library work. This article deals with various respects of the bulletin, particularly gResearch Review". In the end of the article new directions the bulletin should be going to take are discussed.

Analysis of electronic journal usage in Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute Library

@Abstract : The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) Library has provided 300 electronic journals for scientists and engineers by library homepage for three years. In the period, the number of lending and photocopy in printed form has decreased, and the accesses to electronic journals have increased heavily. We report the cause of the change of usage from printed journals to electronic journals based on the statistical data of lending, photocopy, download, access etc. Also, importance of usage data provided by the publishers, prevention of illegal access, effects of electronic journals to library resource management are reported.
