Special feature : Amenities for library
Creating Comfortable Information Splace\library furniture and its layout\
Fumio HIRAYU
(Institute of Library Planning & Children's Books (2-4-23, Nishiki-machi, Nagasaki-shi, Nagasaki 852-8045))
Abstract : This paper introduces the 'amenity' concept in university libraries and special libraries which helps to provide pleasant space for their users. Most of the library buildings and furniture appear to be unconcerned on this subject, yet offering 'amenity' space results in users' satisfaction and popularity, thus leading to user increase. In order to create such 'amenity' areas in existing libraries, remodeling entrances and browsing corners become inevitable. Here, we propose drastic changeover of the current interior materials and designs to more human, comfortable library furniture using natural wood such as cherry and pine.

Yoshiko MATSUSHITA
(Library of Urban Development (13-1, Nagata-cho 2 cho-me, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-0014))
Abstract : When you discuss the amenity of a library, the librarian is no less important than the design and the facilities. I would like to introduce endeavors which have been taken in a one-person library and to consider the human resource factor, namely the librarian's role.Library of Urban Development was founded in 1974 by Urban Developers' Association of Japan. With limited budgets and manpower, the library has been developing many ideas for the users' amenity. The library holds three basic policies ; (1) recognizing a library as a service industry ; (2) making improvements step by step ; and (3) having a broad view outside the library.

I discuss some of them from the viewpoint of the function of libraries in university education : how to offer book information ; how to assist seminar education; how to keep silence in the reading rooms, and so on.

Kumiko TAGUCHI
(Junkudo Bookseller, Ikebukuro Shop (2-15-5 Minami ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tokyo 171-0022))
Abstract : Bookseller industry has apparently enjoyed a rather moderate period compared with other industries after the War, as it has been growing steadily until mid-80's. It is when a discord with contemporary changes burst that Junkudo assailed into it. The largest retail shop opened at Ikebukuro in 1997, which expanded to 6600 square-meter as of December 2001, which is the largest bookshop in Japan and maintains the largest inventory in the world. In this article, the Junkudo's marketing strategy is investigated as a model case to review the post-War history of Japanese Book Industry and to illustrate the current problems. We now stand at the crossroads how to cope with this challenging period and to direct the future of the Industry.
