Abstract : This article deals with electronic
commerce, especially business-to-consumer
type e-commerce. As business-to-consumer
type e-commerce resembles traditional commerce
by mail order, bargaining by e-mail tends
to be regulated by the same law. But some
new experiments suitable for e-mail trades
on the Web are now working.
Among B-to-C electronic commerce formulas,
there are ones which deserve to be business-method-patented.
And software, databases, and digital contents
could be protected by copyright law and anti-unfair
competition law. Recently, in the United
States, UCITA, a draft model state law, was
prepared. It is also discussed in this paper.

Abstract : The rapid growth of electronic

expectations of not only online-shopping
services, but also of non-profit service
providers including libraries. This paper
discusses how American academic libraries
have responded to the expectations of information
literate consumers in terms of customer services
and integrating lessons from B2C (Business-to-customer).
Other categories of electronic commerce such
as B2B (Business-to-business), B2E (Business-to-employee),
and C2C (Consumer-to-consumer) are also examined
for their application to libraries in the
reshaping of existing services and taking
advantage of new business opportunities.
A service-oriented digital library is suggested
as an application of electronic commerce.
