Abstract: Under the circumstance in which digitalization progresses, points to be considered when libraries select foreign journals they subscribe are discussed, mainly focusing on natural science and engineering fields. First, traditional methods and indicators assessing journals used since the printed-journal era are described together with case studies recently applied. Next, some strategies in subscribing and cancelling journals are shown under the situation that electronic journals are spreading while printed ones still exist. Finally, it is examined empirically whether the 'long-tail' phenomenon becomes observed in journal citations. The authors argue that it is difficult to estimate cost-effectiveness on electronic journals because of complexity of their pricing system.

Abstract: Industry-University coordinators face some problems when they have to support researchers with different research backgrounds in finding private corporations to act as partners in joint research. These problems may be difficult to solve through their own efforts. In consequence, it is difficult to improve their matching quality and efficiency. In this paper, we use a macro analysis about needs-seeds matching (using text mining technique) to visualize the results of analysis of patents and papers. This result shows the possibility of enabling coordinators to be efficient goal to promote needs-seeds matching activities much more efficiently by evaluating matching possibilities beforehand, and contributes to improving the quality of their activities.
