Abstract: e-Research is a general term for scientific activities with the method of sharing and reproduce data on the network. e-Research projects and services in humanities and social science have been carried out, which those in natural science predate. Current projects and services in Japan suggest possible change of roles of academic libraries, as data curation and preservation are essential. Historians of science may well contribute to e-Research.

Abstract: In this paper the author discusses the relation between mathematical communications and e-Science from the viewpoint of promoting small scale sciences. Mathematics can be a typical research field supported by digital repositories as a target of e-Science, through constructing digital libraries which equip the added value services like interface among mathematical literatures, computation based databases and software which are essential tools for researchers who are not familiar with mathematics.

Abstract: Researchers get used to using E-journals in the field of Science Technology and Medicine. This paper reviews some challenges of the Chemical Society of Japan to establish its home-grown E-journals and discusses the effect of E-journals' development. E-journals' activity could give some success such as shortening publication times, but the fundamental evaluation of journals was not improved. On the other hand, science in Japan is in a competitive situation to lead Asian countries. Today we could stress that researchers should discuss the significance of home-grown E-journals again.

Abstract: Shinshu University has developed SOAR (Shinshu University Online System of General Academic Resources) intending to make use of an institutional repository as a means of improving the visibility of the researchers and the institution. The system aims to improve researchers' and an institution's visibility by linking an institutional repository, a researcher directory, electronic journals and Web of Science so that audiences can get much information with simple operations. It also aims to enable researchers to unify data management and reduce their load. We describe our approaches and future plan.

Abstract: e-Research, which enables researchers to use IT, communications and information management technologies, has set off a multifaceted use of e-journal information. The activities such as research strategy planning, research outcome promotion, and research assessment could be carried out more effectively by maximizing the use of electronic resources. This paper reviews how researchers' work flow is organically linked to the utilization of the these information and how it adds value to the electronic research information. The paper will discuss librarians' role in the new era of research environment.

Abstract: The situation of patent applications and registrations of universities is analyzed by patent information databases. The unique/original technical fields of a university lead to high ratio of registered patents compared to patent applications. And, many patent applications do not necessarily bring a lot of registered patents. Furthermore, we are able to know an action stage of a university by the examination request ratio, registered patent ratio and consideration of the situation of industrialization. These findings will be useful for universities because they can know the status of their intellectual property activity and fortune strategy for high quality patents.

Abstract: Chiba University Library started approaching campus users by way of podcasting, which is becoming popular both in corporate and educational applications as an RSS-supported audio-visual content delivery method. The first adoption was the multilingual self-guided tour of the library for freshmen in the hope of library-related content naturally penetrating into students' portable audio appliances. The present article describes the philosophy, planning, installation, content creation and statistics and feedbacks of the podcasting project.

Abstract: Mr. Monty Hyams started the British Patents Report in 1951, followed by the Belgian Patents Report. CPI started in 1970 was one of the most sophisticated documentation services in the patent field. A fragmentation coding making use of the 960 positions of the punch card was developed by Mr. Peter Norton. The coding system has been developed and improved to the New Chemical Coding. Derwent Online database service started in 1976. The Derwent online database service initially covered 24 patent issuing authorities, while it now covers 40 countries and authorities. The database became first available on SDC-ORBIT in 1976, while Japanese users could first connect to the database on December 1979 when it was made available on SDC-J. They are now available on DIALOG, QUESTEL-ORBIT, and STN.
